If you start looking at ingredient labels, one thing you’ll see everywhere is flavoring. I have to confess, I didn’t really pay attention to it until we discovered our oldest was battling food sensitivities.

Once I started actually reading labels and looking into what flavoring was, I realized flavorings aren’t nearly as simple as they sound.

Artificial flavors.
Natural flavors.
Organic flavors.

I had to learn the differences and why they mattered. Since then, our family has chosen to avoid artificial flavors and be very selective about the natural flavors we allow in our home.

Let’s break it down.

What Artificial & Natural Flavors Actually Are

ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS

Artificial flavors are chemicals designed to mimic the taste of real foods. According to U.S. food labeling regulations, an artificial flavor is any substance added to food to create flavor that does not come from a natural source like fruit, vegetables, herbs, meat, or fermentation products.

In other words, the flavor didn’t start in nature. Scientists analyze the compounds responsible for a flavor, like strawberry or vanilla, and then recreate those compounds in a lab. This is why a product can taste like fruit even when the fruit itself is barely present or completely missing.

Food manufacturers use artificial flavors because they are: cheaper, more shelf-stable, and consistent in taste.

Another thing that surprised me when I started learning about flavorings is how little detail companies have to provide on the label. Flavor formulas are considered proprietary recipes, so manufacturers usually only have to list “artificial flavor” or “natural flavor,” not the individual chemicals inside the mixture.

That means a single flavor ingredient listed on the label may actually contain many different chemical compounds that consumers never see.

Some consumer advocacy groups have also raised concerns about what’s often called the “GRAS loophole.” GRAS stands for “Generally Recognized As Safe,” and it allows certain ingredients to be used in foods without going through the same formal approval process as new food additives. In some cases, companies or industry groups can determine that a flavoring substance is GRAS based on existing scientific knowledge rather than direct FDA review.

For families who are trying to simplify ingredients, that lack of transparency is one of the reasons flavorings can feel like a gray area.

NATURAL FLAVORS

Natural flavors must come from real plant or animal sources, such as fruit, herbs, meat, or fermentation products. However, the final product can still include additional ingredients like solvents, emulsifiers, and stabilizers that help carry and preserve the flavor compounds.

So while the starting source may be natural, the final ingredient can still be highly processed. That’s why “natural flavors” on a label doesn’t necessarily mean the product is simple or whole-food based.

ORGANIC NATURAL FLAVORS

The type I’m most comfortable with is organic natural flavor, because organic standards place stricter limits on what can be used and how it’s made.

According to the USDA National Organic Program, flavorings used in organic foods:

Must come from natural sources

Cannot use synthetic solvents or artificial preservatives

Must meet organic certification standards

This doesn’t mean organic flavoring is perfect, but it generally means fewer synthetic processing chemicals and higher ingredient standards.

Potential Health Concerns With Artificial Flavors

Artificial flavors are considered safe at typical consumption levels, but diets built mostly on highly processed foods can lead to much greater cumulative exposure. Every person also responds differently. Some people tolerate them without issue, while others are more sensitive. Here are a few areas where sensitivities have been reported:

Headaches & Neurological Symptoms

Some flavor enhancers and artificial flavor compounds have been linked to:

Headaches or migraines

Dizziness

Fatigue or brain fog

Flushing or sweating

Certain flavor enhancers, like monosodium glutamate (MSG), have long been associated with these symptoms in sensitive individuals. Some families notice reducing highly flavored processed foods helps decrease recurring headaches.

Digestive Issues

Possible symptoms include:

Bloating

Gas

Nausea

Stomach pain or diarrhea

Allergic-Type Reactions

True allergies to flavorings are uncommon, but sensitivities happen. Some artificial flavoring mixtures include compounds that can trigger hypersensitivity reactions, especially in people who already have asthma or food sensitivities. Possible reactions may include:

Hives or skin rashes

Itchy throat or mouth

Asthma-like symptoms

Nasal congestion or sinus irritation

Behavioral Changes in Children

Some studies suggest certain artificial additives, including flavorings and colorings, may worsen symptoms of hyperactivity in some children. Possible signs parents sometimes notice include:

Increased hyperactivity

Difficulty focusing

Mood swings

Irritability

Rare Respiratory Issues

Certain flavoring chemicals used in food manufacturing have been linked to lung irritation when inhaled in high amounts. For example, the butter-flavor compound diacetyl has been associated with a severe lung condition called bronchiolitis obliterans (“popcorn lung”) among factory workers exposed to large quantities. This type of exposure is far higher than typical dietary exposure, but it highlights that flavor chemicals are biologically active substances, not simply harmless “taste.”

Where Flavors Hide and How to Spot Them

Flavors are sneaky. They don’t always show up as “artificial flavor” on the label. Sometimes, they’re hiding under other names or processing ingredients.

Here’s what to watch for:

Flavor Labels

Artificial flavor – obvious, but still worth checking where it appears in the ingredient list

Natural flavor – can still be highly processed; not automatically healthier

Artificial vanilla, strawberry flavor, butter flavor, etc. – any flavoring ending in “flavor” can be lab-made

Common Additives That Often Signal Hidden Flavoring

Some additives aren’t flavoring themselves, but they’re used in flavor mixtures or to enhance taste.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) and its cousins:

Hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP)

Autolyzed yeast extract

Sodium caseinate

Yeast extract: these are often added to give “umami” or savory flavors.

Preservatives linked to flavor stability:

Sodium benzoate

Potassium sorbate

others

Maltodextrin or dextrose: used to carry flavor compounds and make them stick.

Artificial sweeteners or sugar substitutes: sometimes combined with flavoring to imitate fruit or chocolate.

Flavor enhancers listed vaguely: “yeast extract,” “natural flavor,” or “spices.” These may contain hidden chemical flavor compounds.

Products Where These Often Appear

Flavored snacks, chips, crackers

Packaged baked goods (muffins, donuts, cookies)

Breakfast cereals and bars

Flavored yogurt, pudding, or non-dairy “milks”

Instant soups, bouillon cubes, and packaged sauces

Soda, fruit punches, and flavored sparkling water

Condiments like ketchup, barbecue sauce, salad dressing

Practical Label-Reading Tips

Shorter is usually better: fewer ingredients usually means less hidden chemistry.

If it says “artificial flavor,” it’s almost always lab-made.

Watch for MSG and its hidden names, especially in savory snacks and soups.

“Natural flavor” is not automatically healthy. Check if it’s organic if that matters to you.

Look for products that actually name the source: e.g., “vanilla extract” or “lemon juice” instead of just “flavor.”

What This Looks Like in Real Life

Our choices should never be based out of fear. Does this information make it harder to find certain foods? Yes, but it also helps us make healthier decisions. If food already has real ingredients that create flavor, why add a lab-made version?

For our family, this simply means we:

Choose whole foods with ingredients we can pronounce and understand

Avoid products with artificial flavors

Be cautious with vague ingredients like “natural flavors”

Prefer foods with organic flavors or simple ingredient lists

Sometimes that means making something at home, choosing a different brand, or doing without. Either way, I feel a sense of peace that I’m providing the best possible options for our family.

How We Explain This to the Kids

When talking with our kiddos, I’ve found simple is best.

“We like to focus on foods God created and this food doesn’t have those.”

“These ingredients aren’t found in nature and might make your body not feel good.”

“Remember how you didn’t feel good after eating that? It could be because of the ingredients.”

You could also try these:

“God made lots of different flavors in meats, fruits, herbs, and vegetables. People sometimes make flavors in factories.”

“We choose foods that help your body feel calm, strong, and happy.”

If you have a child who is naturally curious and wants more information, explain how artificial flavoring affects the body in kid-friendly terms.

Making Change Feel Fun, Not Restrictive

If you decide to reduce or remove artificial flavoring, the goal is not immediate perfection. It’s progress that feels sustainable for your family. Maybe that looks like removing sweetened drinks, skipping highly processed snacks, or choosing different brands.

One simple way to start is by turning the process into a game. Invite your kids to become “ingredient detectives” and look at labels together. You might point out words like artificial flavor, monosodium glutamate, or maltodextrin and ask, “Do you think this ingredient came from a plant or a factory?” This helps turn the moment into curiosity.

It also helps to bring kids into the conversation. When they understand why (for example, some foods help our bodies feel strong and healthy while others may give us headaches or tummy aches) they are often more open to change.

For many families, it helps to think of this as a trial season, not a forever decision. You can simply say, “Let’s try this for a few weeks and see how we feel.” That kind of language takes the pressure off everyone.

If your kids enjoy visuals, a simple chart can be encouraging. Rather than tracking rules, track effort. A sticker or checkmark for each day on the calendar can help kids feel proud of their participation. Keep it light and celebratory.

If a simple chart would be helpful, feel free to check out the Children’s Habit Helper Kit in the Freebie Library. Access is free to anyone who is part of my newsletter family.

When you put all of this together, the picture becomes clearer: artificial flavors are not just harmless additives. They are chemical compounds that interact with the brain, gut, and immune system in ways we are still learning to fully understand.

For some children, the effects are subtle. In others, they are noticeable. For our family, that uncertainty alone was enough to choose a different path.

Sometimes the smallest ingredients can have the biggest impact. For our family, choosing to avoid artificial food dyes is not about fear. It is about understanding how these chemicals interact with our bodies and making thoughtful choices.

When our oldest was first born and battling food sensitivities, I drastically changed my diet. For a season, it consisted mostly of meats, vegetables, and fruits. A natural byproduct of eating this way was that processed foods became very limited.

As we learned more about processed foods, the kinds of ingredients they often contain, and how little nutrition they offer, it became easier to step away from them.

Over time, we discovered enough through both research and experience to decide that artificial food dyes were not something we wanted to include in our diets.

Even though our children have never had them, I understand why many parents may choose to minimize their use or eliminate food dyes altogether. For us, the potential side effects were enough that we did not want to experiment and find out firsthand.

In this post, we will take a closer look at what artificial food dyes are, how they can affect the body, and how to talk about them with your kids in a way they can understand.

*This blog post contains various health information.
What are Artificial Food Dyes, Really?

Artificial food dyes are synthetic chemicals, most commonly made from petroleum (crude oil). In the lab, they are transformed through a chemical process called aromatic sulfonation, which attaches special chemical groups to molecules so they dissolve in water, bind to foods, and stay bright even after cooking or long storage. This makes candy, cereals, snacks, and even some medications vividly colored, but it also means these dyes are highly processed chemical compounds that never existed in nature and provide no nutrition.

Even though the FDA has approved nine synthetic food dyes for use in foods, drugs, and cosmetics, for our family, the potential side effects outweigh any benefit. Simply knowing that these colors start as petroleum and go through chemical transformations before ending up in foods helped us decide to avoid artificial food dyes entirely.

Here are the nine FDA-approved synthetic food dyes in the U.S., with the most common first:

Red 3 and Red 40

Yellow 5 and Yellow 6

Blue 1 and Blue 2

Citrus Red 2

Orange B

These dyes are found in candy, cereals, snacks, frosting, juices, sodas, flavored waters, and other brightly colored processed foods. They can also sneak into items you might not expect, like packaged sauces, fruit snacks, gelatin desserts, and even some breakfast bars.

How Artificial Food Dyes Affect the Body

There are a few adverse effects on the body that make it worth avoiding artificial food dyes. A couple of friends saw real changes in their children’s behavior after removing red dyes from their diets, so it truly does matter.

A review published in the National Library of Medicine explains that: “The molecules of synthetic colorants are small, and the immune system finds it difficult to defend the body against them. They can also bond to food or body proteins and, thus, are able to act in stealth mode to circumvent and disrupt the immune system. The consumption of synthetic food colors, and their ability to bind with body proteins, can have significant immunological consequences. This consumption can activate the inflammatory cascade, can result in the induction of intestinal permeability to large antigenic molecules, and could lead to cross-reactivities, autoimmunities, and even neurobehavioral disorders.”

Let’s break this down a little!

The nervous system and behavior

Multiple studies suggest that artificial dyes may influence brain chemistry and nervous system activity, especially in sensitive children. Red 40 has been associated with histamine-related reactions and changes in brain signaling in some studies. This could contribute to:

Restlessness or impulsivity

Hyperactivity

Difficulty focusing

Mood swings

Even in adults, some people report heightened anxiety or irritability after consuming artificial dyes.

When someone eats a brightly dyed snack, their brain and body may react like they’ve been given a chemical stimulant – even though it’s not caffeine.

Gut and immune system impact

The gut and brain are closely connected. Artificial food dyes can interact with the gut microbiome, the community of bacteria in our digestive system.

In other words, emerging research suggests that synthetic dyes may:

Alter the balance of gut bacteria, favoring strains linked to inflammation

Trigger low-level immune responses in sensitive individuals

Contribute to digestive discomfort

Physically, this may look like:

stomachaches or nausea

skin reactions (rashes, eczema, hives)

headaches or migraines

worsened symptoms in kids with sensitivities

This gut-immune-brain connection helps explain why some children experience mood changes or hyperactivity after consuming dyes. When the gut is irritated, for any reason, overall health is affected. For children especially, these small things can cause bigger disruptions.

Metabolism and Detox Pathways

Our liver and kidneys work to filter chemicals from our bodies. Artificial food dyes are foreign compounds that the body has to metabolize and excrete. Repeated exposure can:

Add stress to detox pathways

Create byproducts that may increase oxidative stress

Increase overall inflammatory signaling

While occasional exposure may be handled well by most adults, children and sensitive individuals or those with weakened immune systems may respond more noticeably.

If you’re curious what each individual food dye has been linked to, the Center for Science in the Public Interest has put together this easy-to-read list of the nine most common artificial food dyes.

Nutritional Value of Artificial Food Dyes

This one is pretty easy to answer. There is no nutritional value in artificial food dyes. They don’t nourish the body and exist purely for appearance.

Foods with synthetic dyes are often:

highly processed

high in sugar

low in vitamins and minerals

By avoiding artificially dyed foods, we naturally move toward:

simpler ingredients

whole foods

colors that come from fruits, vegetables, and spices

If a food needs chemicals to look appealing, it’s probably not something our bodies truly need.

Safety Concerns & Global Differences in Regulation

While artificial dyes are legal in the United States, several of them are restricted or require warning labels in other countries.

For example:

In parts of Europe, foods with certain dyes must carry warnings about possible effects on children’s behavior.

Some dyes used in the U.S. are banned or limited elsewhere.

Certain artificial food dyes have been linked to genotoxic effects in lab studies, meaning they can potentially affect DNA at high doses.

Research within the U.S. has also raised some concerns. The Environmental Working Group, a consumer advocacy organization, notes:

“These chemicals were last reviewed by the FDA decades ago, some as early as 1969. Other dyes linked to health harms have not been reviewed in more than 40 years. Reevaluation by the FDA is not required, even when new evidence points to potential health hazards.”

A review published in the National Library of Medicine reported that the amount of artificial food colors certified by the FDA increased more than 5-fold from 1950 (12 mg/capita/day) to 2012 (68 mg/capita/day).

California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) also found that:

“All of the FDA’s Acceptable Daily Intake levels (ADIs) for synthetic food dyes are based on 35- to 70-year-old studies that were not designed to detect the types of behavioral effects that have been observed in children. Comparisons with newer studies indicate that the current ADIs may not adequately protect children from behavioral effects. For some of the dyes, these comparisons indicate that updated levels would be much lower.”

When you put all of this together, it’s hard not pause. For us, it felt wise to lean toward caution and choose simpler, more natural foods.

How We Explain This to Our Kids

Our choices should never be based out of fear. Is this information alarming? Yes. But instead of letting it disarm us, we should let it arm us to make informed decisions.

When talking with our kiddos, I’ve found simple is best.

“We like to focus on ingredients God created and this food doesn’t have those.”

“These ingredients aren’t found in nature and might make your body not feel good.”

“Remember how you didn’t feel good after eating that? It could be because of the ingredients.”

You could also try these:

“God made colors in fruits and vegetables. People made colors in factories.”

“We choose foods that help your body feel calm, strong, and happy.”

“Sometimes bright colors can make your body feel too jumpy.”

If you have a child who is naturally curious and wants more information, explain how artificial food dyes affect the body in kid-friendly terms.

Making Change Feel Fun, Not Restrictive

If you decide to reduce or avoid artificial food dyes, the goal is not perfection. It’s progress that feels doable for your family.

Maybe that looks like: removing sweetened drinks or brightly colored snacks or alluring cereals or sourcing different supplements.

One simple way to start is by turning the process into a game rather than a strict rule. Invite your kids to become “ingredient detectives” and look at labels together. You might point out words like Red 40, Yellow 5, or Blue 1 and ask, “Do you think this color came from a plant or a factory?” This can help turn the moment into curiosity.

It also helps to bring kids into the conversation. Rather than just taking foods away, talk about why you are making changes. You might share that some foods help our bodies feel calm and steady, while others can make them feel a little too jumpy. When kids understand the why, they are often more open to the change.

When you put all of this together, the picture becomes clearer. Artificial food dyes are not just harmless colors. They are chemical compounds that interact with the brain, gut, and immune system in ways we are still learning to fully understand. For some children, the effects are subtle. For others, they are noticeable. For our family, that uncertainty alone was enough to choose a different path and avoid artificial food dyes.

Have you noticed any effects from artificial food dyes in your family? I’d love to hear your experience in the comments.

At our home, broth is now a staple in both the fridge and pantry. It wasn’t always that way. It grew out of a season of searching for health answers for our middle child, a journey that marked the beginning of our experience with GAPS and gut healing.

His body reacted finicky even to good, nutritious food. By this time, we had already overhauled our diet for our oldest due to food sensitivities. Digestive enzymes helped, but only temporarily, and the sensitivities would always return. It was frustrating.

As I learned more about gut healing, and how GAPS was designed specifically to repair the inner lining of the digestive tract, meat stock and bone broth emerged as a cornerstone of the approach.

I also discovered that broth-making isn’t one-size-fits-all. The type of bones used and the length of cooking time affect how the body responds, which is why GAPS recommends two different preparations for different stages of healing.

No matter which one you choose to make, both meat stock and bone broth contain incredible health benefits.

Meat Stock: Purposeful, Early-Stage Healing

This preparation is typically used during early gut healing because it is gentler and less stimulating for sensitive systems. Meat stock is prepared using bones that still contain meat, connective tissue, and joints, such as knuckles, chicken legs, thighs, feet, or joint bones from larger animals. These stocks are cooked for a relatively short period of time, which significantly affects their biochemical profile.

Because meat stock is not cooked long enough to fully extract large amounts of free glutamates, it tends to be better tolerated by individuals with compromised gut and neurological function, which is common in those beginning GAPS.

Note: Glutamic acid is a naturally occurring amino acid that plays an important role in brain and nervous system function.

Why Shorter Cooking Matters

During prolonged cooking, certain amino acids, particularly glutamic acid, convert into free glutamates. In sensitive individuals, these can overstimulate the nervous system. By limiting cooking time, meat stock provides nourishment without overloading a system that is already stressed.

GAPS-Specific Use

In the GAPS protocol, meat stock is introduced early because it supplies gelatin, minerals, and amino acids in a form that is gentle, reparative, and less inflammatory. It is intended to be consumed as a complete meal, including:

the broth

the vegetables

the meat removed from the bones

softened cartilage and connective tissue

When we first began, pureeing the entire pot and drinking it made this much easier and more digestible. It is a little thicker in consistency than broth, and I’ll admit, it was not my favorite. Often, I used it as a base for soups to hide the texture. If there were times I didn’t want to blend all the tissue, I would simply strain the stock.

Suggested Cooking Times

Poultry: 1.5–3 hours

Beef, bison, lamb: up to 6 hours (slightly longer in a slow cooker)

Bone Broth: Deep Extraction and Structural Repair

This preparation is more concentrated and is often better tolerated after some gut healing has taken place. Bone broth is made using bones with little remaining meat, such as marrow bones, and is cooked for an extended period – typically 24 to 48 hours. This long simmer allows for maximum extraction of minerals, collagen, and amino acids from the bones.

The resulting broth is richer, more concentrated, and often gels when cooled due to its high gelatin content.

Amino Acid Considerations

Bone broth contains significantly higher levels of the amino acids glycine and proline, which play an important role in connective tissue repair, joint health, and skin integrity. However, it also contains higher levels of glutamic acid and free glutamates.

For some individuals – particularly those prone to seizures, tics, ADD/ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, or autoimmune disorders – this concentration can aggravate neurological symptoms if introduced too early.

Note: GAPS recognizes the close relationship between the gut and the brain. When the gut lining is compromised, compounds that would normally be regulated can enter the bloodstream and affect neurological function. For this reason, bone broth is often better tolerated after initial gut healing has begun.

I made meat stock for several months before making bone broth. When I introduced it, we started by drinking smaller amounts (half a coffee cup), but quickly moved up to whole cups. Soon, I was using it as an entire soup base and we drank it regularly as if it were tea.

Why Gelatin Is Central to Gut Healing

One of the most powerful healing components found in both preparations is gelatin, derived from joints, knuckles, and connective tissue. Gelatin plays a critical role in repairing and protecting the mucosal lining of the digestive tract.

This lining acts as a selective barrier, allowing nutrients to pass through while preventing toxins and pathogens from entering the bloodstream. When it is damaged, systemic inflammation and neurological symptoms often follow.

A well-made broth that gels when cooled indicates sufficient gelatin content. This “jelly-like” consistency is something to be celebrated and a sign you’re on the right track.

The Role of Marrow

Marrow bones contribute additional healing properties. As marrow breaks down during cooking, it releases compounds that support immune function, cellular repair, and mineral absorption.

I intentionally scoop out and consume the marrow when possible. Over time, I’ve noticed tangible improvements in skin health and joint comfort, an observation that aligns with traditional use and modern understanding of connective tissue nutrition.

How I Make It

The process for making either meat stock or bone broth is simple once you’ve done it a few times. The main difference lies in the type of bones used and the length of time they’re simmered.

<polyline points="6 9 6 2 18 2 18 9"/><rect x="6" y="14" width="12" height="8"/>

Print Recipe Here

Put bones in a pot and add enough water to cover them with an additional 2–3 inches.

Add 1/4 cup raw apple cider vinegar and let sit for 30 minutes. This helps minerals leach out of the bones.

Bring to a boil. Skim off any “scum” that rises to the surface. If left in, it can impart a sour taste.

Add coarsely chopped vegetables, such as celery, onion, and carrots.

Reduce heat to a gentle simmer and cook for the desired amount of time.

Add fresh herbs, such as thyme, rosemary, or bay leaves, during the last hour of cooking. This makes all the difference in the world.

Once done, cool slightly and strain.

Pour into glass mason jars and add Celtic sea salt (we use 1 tablespoon per half gallon).

Refrigerate. (Optional: broth can also be canned or frozen in freezer-safe containers.)

Ideally, there will be a nice fat cap to seal in the stock or broth until ready to use, though a lid is still needed on the jar. If a fat cap is present, it can be stored in the refrigerator for a couple months.

Once the fat cap is broken and the broth is exposed to air, it should be used within 5–7 days. If using after the fat cap is broken, simply bring it to a boil, discard any scum, and use.

Aside from drinking it hot as you would tea, we love using this as a base for soups and stews, and to cook rice and gluten-free noodles.

Tips

Any kind of pot can be used: stainless steel, Dutch oven, or crock pot. We use a large 16 qt. stainless-steel pot. Try to avoid non-stick varieties if possible.

Make large batches if using it to heal the body (drinking throughout the day). Our pot makes approximately 2.5 gallons of broth, which lasts us about three weeks, or two weeks if we make more soup.

Fresh herbs should be wrapped in cheesecloth or an herb basket for easy removal, as they do not soften enough to eat.

Try to find a good, reliable source for your bones. Local grocery stores are fine, but they won’t have the same nutritional profile as grass-fed or organic sources. Get to know local farmers or visit farmers’ markets for better options.

If you want to add fresh garlic bulbs (lots of health benefits), do not add them until the last 30 minutes of cooking. The flavor develops quickly and can easily take over the broth—ask me how I know! ?

If You Don’t Have Time to Make Broth

If making broth from scratch isn’t realistic right now, there are high-quality options available. I’ve listed a few below that I feel comfortable recommending, along with tips on what to look for when purchasing broth.

What to Look for in a Store-Bought Broth

When choosing a stock or broth to purchase, prioritize the following:

Bones listed as a primary ingredient (not just “natural flavors”)

No yeast extract, MSG, or “flavor enhancers”

Simple ingredient lists (bones, water, vegetables, vinegar, herbs, salt)

Grass-fed or pasture-raised sources, when possible

Brands I’ve Found to Be the Best Options

These are products I’ve personally used and feel comfortable recommending based on ingredient quality, preparation method, and taste:

Kettle & Fire Chicken Broth
Why I like it: slow-simmered, organic, free-range bones, minimal ingredients

Kettle & Fire Beef Broth
Why I like it: slow-simmered, organic, grass-fed beef bones, minimal ingredients

Pacific Foods Organic Chicken Bone Broth With Sea Salt
Note: The Organic Chicken Broth version from this brand uses “broth” and “chicken flavor,” so I only use this specific one.

Broth has become a staple in our home not just for its taste, but for how it supports healing from the inside out. What started as a necessity for my middle child’s digestive health has grown into a practice we all rely on for nourishment and comfort.

Whether you start with a simple meat stock, dive into bone broth, or keep a few trusted store-bought cartons on hand, every cup is a step toward stronger gut health, resilience, and wellbeing.

I can still remember diving into the natural health world out of necessity over a decade ago and feeling overwhelmed. There were so many different natural brands to choose from, and I had never heard about any of them. It was like learning to shop all over again.

At the time, we were mitigating food and environmental stressors with our oldest child. As a first time mom, worn down from a baby who cried two thirds of the day, navigating brands and their parent companies wasn’t on my radar.

It wasn’t until after our second child was born and their health issues were leveled did I become aware that some of the natural brands I was purchasing weren’t independent. Rather they were owned by larger (sometimes well-known) companies. Unfortunately, those companies didn’t exactly align with our values, represent a healthy, holistic image, or offer much transparency.

Now, that alone doesn’t mean the products themselves are “bad”, but for me it caused a pause. As a small family farm, I know what a blessing it is to receive local support. But I also know the constraint of needing to stick within budget.

When I was able, I took the time to research some of the natural brands I was using. Sometimes, friends farther along in their health journey had answers, sometimes it meant doing some digging online, and sometimes it was just frustrating.

It can be really hard to juggle stewarding health, finances, and values. As I continued to learn, I tried to be intentional about where I spent our dollars. I wanted to offer healthier products to my family, support independent companies with honorable intentions when able, and not blow our finances.

The following guide is simply to help you make informed decisions that align with what’s most important to you.

Quick Note on Stewardship

I mentioned earlier that balancing stewardship of multiple things can be challenging. God has convicted me that choosing what we put into our bodies and use around our homes is part of stewardship.

Scripture reminds us:

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

I Corinthians 10:31 NIV

This doesn’t mean every decision needs to be perfect. I would love to have a house full of small independent brands based on integrity. But our budget would be pressed too thin, and on occasion, some natural products didn’t perform as well with well water.

Just do the best you can with what you’ve got. Pay attention, ask questions, do research, advocate for better options, and offer yourself (and others) grace when choices are limited.

Difference between Large Corporations, Private, and Independent

Large Corporations typically own multiple brands across various industries (sometimes hundreds). Decisions are often centralized: marketing, sourcing, product strategy, and pricing may be controlled at the corporate level. Some brands are able to maintain their original formulas and practices, so looking for transparency is key.

Privately held companies are not publicly traded and the shares are owned by founders, family members, private investors and/or equity firms. This doesn’t indicate who controls the decision making, values, formulations, or whether investors influence the brand.

Independent companies are usually founder-led or family-owned. This means there is no controlling stake by larger conglomerates, which provides greater autonomy over sourcing, formulations, long-term decisions, and overall mission. However, “independent” is not a legal designation.

Conglomerate-Owned – part of a larger corporation (e.g., Unilever, Nestlé, General Mills)

Publicly Traded – shares sold on stock exchange; financial priorities may influence decisions

Privately Held – not publicly traded; ownership may vary

Independent / Founder-led – mission-driven, privately held

How To Use This Natural Brands & Ownership Guide

If this seems overwhelming or stressful, here is your gentle reminder to pause and breathe. My top tips are listed below. In addition, feel free to save or print this PDF Natural Brands & Ownership Guide for personal reference.

Start with one category at a time

Support independent companies when able

Don’t make decisions based on fear

Pray over information gleaned

Listen to the Holy Spirit’s guidance

Winter colds and flu can leave us feeling drained and missing fresh air and sunshine. Between busy schedules and low immune energy, it’s easy to get knocked off balance. A few trusted natural cold remedies can help your family feel a little more prepared.

I’ve gathered a list of our favorite products to use when the cold season strikes. I don’t use all of these at once, nor do I keep every item in stock, but having options means I’m ready if something sells out or shipping takes longer than expected.

I completely understand this list might be overwhelming. Keep in mind, though, that it’s simply a collection of options to help you be prepared.

I’ve organized this list by category, and within each, by company. These natural cold remedies are things our family has tried, or come from a company we trust based on other products we’ve used.

If you’re wondering how I chose these particular companies/products, check out my post A Peek Inside Our Natural Medicine Cabinet.

Use the Table of Contents below to jump straight to the category you need, whether it’s general immune support, coughing relief, or essential oil ideas.

Most women dread a certain week each month due to PMS Symptoms (Premenstrual Syndrome). We’d much rather skip the days of cramping, bloating, and headaches. There are a million other things to do instead! Since it’s something we usually can’t avoid, it makes sense to learn how to manage these pesky symptoms.

I used to be the girl missing school or work, curled into a ball, living off over the counter pain meds, changing pads too often every time I cycled. So, I’ll never forget the relief I felt after cleaning up my diet and incorporating whole-food supplements. It was life changing!

There are several natural supplements available to help support our bodies nutritionally. Many times, the discomforts we feel are caused by imbalances, and once those are brought back into balance, symptoms dissipate.

The following supplements are things I’ve personally used, or know to be effective based on testimonies from close friends, while battling PMS symptoms. They are made using whole foods, herbs, bovine/porcine organs, and essential oils. No artificial flavors/dyes, synthetics, fillers, binders, added sugars, or any other processed ingredients. As always, please consider checking with your doctor or reaching out to a nutritionist (holistic practitioner) first with any concerns.

*This blog post contains various health information. Nothing is intended to be, nor should it be construed as, medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Any supplement(s) and/or treatment(s) discussed and/or listed should be reviewed by your health professional before using. If you have a medical concern, please consult with an appropriately-licensed physician. If you think you have a medical emergency, contact your doctor immediately. Full medical disclosure here.

Clean Diet

This is the one thing that shocked me the most when it came to improving my monthly cycles. Cutting out ALL processed foods, grains, gluten, soy, and dairy was something I did out of necessity while navigating health issues with my oldest daughter. I was extremely surprised at how many physical and mental ailments improved, or disappeared altogether, the longer I kept a clean diet.

In regards to PMS, my cycle became regular, bloating significantly decreased, I could get by without pain meds for cramping, my moods didn’t seem as erratic, and the hormonal breakouts on the lower half of my face stopped.

This alone, coupled with how radically my daughter’s health improved, was enough to convince me that keeping a clean diet is extremely important. When I was no longer breastfeeding and started incorporating other foods back into my diet, symptoms started creeping back in.

What we put into our bodies is truly the backbone of our overall health and its importance should not be overlooked.

Standard Process

This has been our go to brand of supplements for just about everything over the last ten years. Each one is carefully formulated to support various parts of the body nutritionally using concentrated doses of whole foods (many of which are grown on their own farms) and bovine/porcine organs. They are more expensive, but I have never experienced such quick results with anything else.

Modern day diets are void of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals necessary to maintain a strong, healthy body. Standard Process supplements help replenish and strengthen the body so each organ and system can return to functioning on its own.

Since the supplements are literally just food, I’ve never worried about or accidentally taken too many. With acute symptoms (or when healing from injury/surgery) I’ll take as many as needed until symptoms start to alleviate. For ongoing maintenance, one or two a day is usually fine. In many cases, once the body is balanced and being nutritionally fed through clean eating, supplements may no longer be needed, or only needed on occasion when the body is stressed.

Symplex F – General women’s health, endocrine system, and balance. (I took it every day for a couple years. Now just as needed when my body feels tired/off.)

Utrophin PMG – Targets uterine health. (I used it during cycle days before my partial hysterectomy.)

Ovex / Ovex P – Targets ovarian health and androgen producing functions. Used to help reduce heavy bleeding, establish a regular cycle. (I use it leading up to and during cycle days.)

Calcium Lactate – Great for fevers, cramping, canker sores and maintaining bone density. This is a staple in our home and was a life saver when it came to dealing with menstrual cramps. (I used this the first few days of my cycle to greatly reduce uterine cramping.)

Organically Bound Minerals – Thyroid and parasympathetic nervous system support. (I use this as needed when my body feels run down or if my immune system is challenged.)

Trace Minerals B-12 – Supports a variety of important functions in the body, especially within the endocrine and musculoskeletal systems. (I use this as needed when my body feels run down or if my immune system is challenged.)

Earthley Wellness

I have not used all of these personally, but I have been impressed with the products we’ve tried so far. These tinctures are a great, less expensive natural option. The liquid form makes it easy to drip sublingually (under your tongue) for optimal absorption.

Earthley focuses on using herbs, flowers, and mushrooms in a natural way. Their website has a lot of great information on each tincture, including usage recommendations.

Lunamore – Metabolic support, hormone balance, reduce cramps, support blood sugar balance.

Ease the Ache – Helps reduce pain, bloating, and backaches.

Natural Balance – Hormone and energy support. (I use it to boost my energy levels occasionally.)

Nourish Her Naturally – Helps balance hormones, support healthy energy, and overall wellness.

Young Living

These supplements are a great blend of foods, herbs, flowers, and essential oils. Like Standard Process and Earthley, Young Living conducts third party testing to verify quality of ingredients. They also do a lot of research when formulating.

The CortiStop and EndoGize supplements are designed to be taken for a shorter period of time followed by a rest period. I’ve used all three linked products with noticeable results. Mineral Essence is something I use on a more regular basis for overall health maintenance.

CortiStop – Helps balance cortisol levels and the glandular system.

EndoGize – Supports and balances the endocrine system.

Mineral Essence – Ionic magnesium mineral blend easily absorbed by the body.

Essential Oils – There is a long list of oils that can help when applied topically or diffused (each oil will have varied dilution rates). Try rose, clary sage, Idaho blue spruce, sage, fennel, ylang ylang, bergamot, SclarEssence, Dragon Time, and/or EndoFlex.

Oregano Oil

Not directly related to PMS, but organic oregano essential oil brought a three to four year stint of feminine itching to an end in just three days. Yes, literally three days. The uncomfortableness, embarrassment, and unrelenting itching was horrible. There were times I had to cancel plans because of it.

In a way it was baffling because we eat a very clean diet with minimal sugar. Natural remedies for things like candida, yeast, and other bacterial overgrowth only helped for a short while. I even tried the conventional route with a few rounds of antibiotics and other prescriptions, but those only made symptoms worse.

I stumbled across oregano oil while researching something completely different. It’s known to be “anti” pretty much everything, so I thought why not give it a try. I diluted the oregano essential oil in fractioned coconut oil, poured it into a roller, and applied it to the women’s reproductive organs Vita Flex areas on the insides of my feet.

I am still praising God for the amazing power of this oil and His bringing it to my attention. Within a day the itching reduced considerably and within three days it was completely gone. Raw, sensitive skin was finally able to heal. I could move around freely without worrying about triggering an itching episode. No more anxiety trying to figure out what was wrong. God’s creation gave me my life back!

Topical Use: Dilute 1 drop oregano essential oil with 4 drops carrier oil. Test in a small area first. Do not put in direct contact with eyes, nasal membranes, or mouth due to high phenol properties.

Over the last ten years, we’ve learned a lot about how important reading labels is. It’s easy to be overwhelmed when walking into a health store for remedies or supplements because there are so many different options. If you’re just perusing to gather information or stock up the medicine cabinet, it feels manageable. However, if you’re in a rush trying to find something for someone sick at home, not so much!

How do you know which one to pick? Why is this one dye free and the other not? Do ingredients like corn syrup really matter? What’s the difference between artificial and natural flavoring? How do I know which product is going to be most effective?

To help clear up a few of those questions, let’s take a look at why choosing a natural cough syrup, with healthier ingredients, is a better option. We’ll also explore a few items we’ve found helpful in our household.

*This blog post contains various health information.
Why Natural Ingredients are Better

It can be confusing, not to mention time consuming, to research what every ingredient is. Especially when half of the ingredients aren’t easily pronounced and/or are unknown unless you have a medical/science background.

This is why sticking to products with all-natural ingredients, that are easily identifiable, is better. Honey? Great for healing wounds, has anti-bacterial properties, tastes sweet, and coats the throat. Onion and garlic? Powerhouse ingredients for fighting a litany of things, great for respiratory ailments. Peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils? When used properly, these oils help open airways quickly.

There are innumerable herbs, flowers, and spices God created with mending properties. Many of them, you can grow right in your own backyard, which enables you to produce your own little apothecary.

No need to worry about side effects from:

food dyes (cancer risks, behavioral and allergic reactions)

artificial flavoring (synthesized from non-food sources rather than extracted from natural ingredients like plants, animals, or fermented products)

corn syrup (increased risk of diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, glyphosate concerns, inflammation, no nutrition value)

The only cautionary ingredient is honey, which has been known to cause reactions in infants.

Thyme and Onion Cough Syrup

I first saw this “infused honey” recipe on The Fewell Homestead’s Instagram page. I was immediately intrigued by the use of thyme. There is a plethora of thyme growing in several of our flower beds and using it for something other than culinary delights seemed purposeful. There are no precise measurements, just a list of ingredients with anti-bacterial/viral fighting properties.

Ingredients:

Handful of fresh thyme

½ to 1 onion (yellow)

2-3 cloves garlic

Raw honey

To Make:

Fill the bottom half of a pint size mason jar with fresh thyme. Add sliced onions and garlic cloves until about three-fourths full. Pour in honey until everything is covered, leaving one inch head space. Loosely cover the jar with a lid and let it sit, out of direct sunlight, on the counter for one week. (Remember the lid is not tight, so be careful if you move it or it’ll leak. Don’t ask how I know this!) Strain and walla! Homemade herbal cough syrup.

To Use:

1 Tbsp as needed. Store in the fridge for a few months. Make sure you use a fresh spoon each time to prevent spoiling.

Essential Oil Cough Syrup

This recipe is taken from The Homesteader’s Herbal Companion by Amy Fewell. I’ve been using essential oils for many things the last few years, so it made sense to try them for this. It only took five minutes to make and the natural menthol in some of the essential oils works quickly.

I would not recommend this cough syrup for children under seven years of age. Peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils work effectively to open airways/calm the respiratory system. Since younger children’s respiratory systems are still developing, it’s best to avoid anything that might cause distress.

Ingredients:

½ Tbsp every 4-6 hours. Store on the counter (out of direct sunlight) when not in use. Lasts 5-7 days. Use a clean spoon each time to prevent spoiling.

Better Quality Store Options

If making your own homemade cough syrup isn’t an option, here are a couple healthier alternatives you can find online or at local health stores.

Earthley Wellness Cough-B-Gone – This is a great herbal tincture made with dandelion root, mullein leaves, and fenugreek seeds. I love how many of Earthley’s products are available in an alcohol free option. Our whole family has used this!

Nature’s Answer Mullein X Kids Cough Syrup – A proprietary blend of herbs and fruits mixed with honey make this a nice option. Please note the dosage is different on this one. Children aged 2-6 take 1 tsp, mixed with water or juice, every 12 hours.

Our natural medicine cabinet has been “unusual” for ten years now. When we discovered how healing whole foods and herbs could be, our approach to over the counter things changed.

I never imagined God would use my daughter’s experience with food sensitivities to show us different ways to heal the body. I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. Afterall, they were more expensive, I couldn’t buy them from the grocery store, and most people didn’t know anything about them. However, seeing radical changes in a short time, with my own eyes, quickly made me an advocate.

As a result, the natural medicine cabinet contains a blend of whole food supplements and remedies formulated with natural ingredients created by God, recommended specifically for us by trusted practitioners. These supplements contain no: artificial flavors/coloring, harmful fillers or binders, synthetic ingredients/vitamins.

If this seems impossible, let me assure you, it’s not. So let’s talk about how we curate things, organize the cabinet, and what our favorite companies are!

Filling our cabinet didn’t happen overnight! High quality, natural supplements are more expensive than most store brands. It’s tempting to buy less expensive versions; however, you most likely won’t get the same results and/or higher doses will be required.

Some of these natural supplements can only be ordered/purchased through practitioners. You may be thinking, “Great! Now I have to spend even more money!” Yes, you do. But hear me out. Would you rather spend money on whatever general/specific supplements you think you need or would you rather have a specific list that’s catered to what your body actually needs and can readily use???

Healthcare is the extreme opposite of “One size fits all.” Over the years we’ve learned the body self-prioritizes what it needs to heal first. My body rarely calls for the same supplements as my husband (even if we have the exact same symptoms). One of my kiddos needs cod liver oil while the other requires tuna omega-3 oil.

Our Approach

We started with the supplements our daughter needed, which was mostly digestive related, and then overall support. As her body started to heal, we turned to my body’s needs: minerals, fats, heart help, hormone balancing, general support. Soon after that, hubby’s metal/chemical toxicity was tended to.

As we could, we started keeping basic supplements in the natural medicine cabinet. Things like: cod liver/tuna omega-3 oils, digestive enzymes, calcium, female hormone support, wheat germ oil, vitamins A/B/C/D, minerals, drainage support, bacterial/viral support. If one of us repeatedly do better with a certain supplement, we keep it on hand.

Ten years later, we have quite the variety of tried and true natural based supplements to help us address a wide variety of nutritional deficiencies!

Natural Medicine Cabinet Organizational Tips

Keeping bottles organized is key, especially when you have a lot! Once you find a system that works, stick with it. I’m so familiar with where things are, I can often open the cabinet and pull what’s needed even with the lights off. We’re normally reaching for supplements when someone’s health is amiss, so don’t add stress by not being able to find things.

Shelving

For years, we used a variety of adjustable plastic shelving. We’ve lived in three different houses, each with different cabinet spaces, and found them the best solution. If you have the option of having custom made shelves, I highly recommend! We finally did this a couple years ago and it’s been a game changer.

Alphabetical Order

Our supplements are broken into a different categories. Within each category, supplements are alphabetized. We all know the alphabet and the categories are pretty obvious, so there’s no wasted time standing there trying to guess where a certain supplement might be.

Categories/Groups

Whole food supplements are what we use most often and take up the most space, so those are the main category. Herbal supplements are another, liquid homeopathies a third category, and a smattering of various brands compose the fourth category. There is no actual “numbering system” to coincide with these; it just reflects how they’re grouped in the cabinet.

Labeling

Whenever a bottle is opened, we write the date on the cap in permanent marker. This helps me track how quickly the supplement is being consumed, which helps when order time comes around. And just as kitchen herbs lose their potency the older they get, so do natural supplements. If the supplement is older, we’re comfortable taking a slightly higher dose since we know the quality is high.

Our Favorite Natural Supplements

We’re fortunate to have been introduced to the following supplements from trusted practitioners who did a lot of the leg work for us. They spent time researching the company’s practices, formulations, ethics, sources, met with directors, etc. Unfortunately, many companies cut corners by adding fillers, using cheaper synthetic versions, using low potencies, GMO ingredients, etc.

Additionally, taking time to research what other ingredients work synergistically takes time and effort. Rarely, are any of the supplements we use just one ingredient. Instead they are a combination of ingredients that may help boost absorption, provide support to other areas known to be affected, or make the main ingredient more effective.

I always advise working with a trusted practitioner before starting new supplements. They can help individualize a plan and pinpoint what supplements will be the most effective. You should also spend time doing your own research, so you understand what the supplements you’re using are. If there’s one thing we’ve learned over the years, it’s to never be surprised over what’s needed. Afterall, God created some beautifully complex creatures when he made us!

Standard Process

Standard Process offers whole-food based nutritional supplements formulated to be bioavailable to our bodies. They’re a multi-generational, family owned and operated company that’s been successful for over 90 years old. Standard Process was founded by Dr. Royal Lee, who was a pioneer in the twentieth century, known for advocating for natural health and holistic healing. Taken from their website:

From our inception, Dr. Royal Lee recognized the negative impact the Standard American Diet had on overall health. He believed that processed foods depleted our food sources of the rich nutrition once found in them. He understood that good health comes from good nutrition, and the best nutrition comes from whole foods. Dr. Lee dedicated his life to perfecting the production of whole food-based supplements from the soil used to grow crops to the manufacturing processes used to create the supplement – Standard Process has always focused on putting vitality into every bottle.

Standard Process – About Us

We have always experienced positive results with these supplements. Our bodies are able to breakdown, absorb, and utilize the ingredients. They’re made with natural food ingredients (often grown on their own farms) and various bovine/porcine organs. We rarely, if ever, worry about taking too much since they’re literally just food. I’ve even used the garlic supplements to flavor meals when in a pinch!

I can’t say enough positive things about Standard Process supplements, which is probably why they take up the vast majority of our natural medicine cabinet! Some of their products are available online, but it’s always best to meet with a practitioner first to ensure you’re taking exactly what your body needs.

MediHerb

MediHerb is a line of products formulated with a single herb, or a combination of herbs, that work synergistically to provide optimal results. The supplements are manufactured in Australia, and Standard Process is the sole distributor in the United States.

They source high quality herbs from around the world. Supplements go through five rounds of testing before being bottled. MediHerb also “utilizes a seven-day slow drip 1:2 Cold Percolation technology to preserve the full phytochemical spectrum of the herb.”

We find these herbal supplements to be more helpful in acute situations as the potency can be higher than whole foods. Caution is needed when using MediHerbs with children, so most often, Jason and I are the ones utilizing these. Similar to Standard Process, some of these products are available online, but again, I’d suggest meeting with a practitioner first.

As the price of supplements continues to increase, I’ve been searching for less expensive alternatives that would still provide healthy, quality, natural remedies. I was introduced to Earthley Wellness by a friend over the summer and have been very pleased with everything we’ve tried so far.

Earthley was started by a mom, whose child suffered from allergies and health challenges. After disappointment from conventional suggestions and failed healing, she decided to do her own research. The result was a homemade diaper cream, which led to studying herbalism, creating tinctures for friends and family, and eventually opening this company in 2016. A story so familiar to our own!

They offer a wide variety of herbal tinctures for various ailments, many of which are made with vegetable glycerin (as opposed to alcohol). A huge plus! The vast majority of products contain, “NO added sugars, colors, flavors, preservatives, allergens (gluten, dairy, soy, corn, eggs, fish) or other junk!” In addition, third party labs are used for testing.

Ordering can be done online, shipping has been quick, health improvements have been noticed, and the price point is much easier on the wallet! I really love how the products “simply” use God’s creation, often found in your own backyard. When grown and cared for carefully, the herbs, flowers, tree barks, and berries are filled with naturally occurring vitamins and nutrients.

There are two other companies we’ve used the past couple years. The first is Healthy Families for God. I’ve followed Sara Poff for several years now and really appreciate how she digs into research. The information she shares is backed up by resources and/or taken from her nutrition experience. I also like her Biblical perspective when it comes to natural healing. She spends time personally sourcing the ingredients in their supplements to make sure they meet her high quality standards. Ordering is available online.

The other company is Young Living. I’m not a huge fan of MLM organizations overall. However, we’ve personally experienced quick, positive results with several of their essential oils and supplements. Ordering is available online and I appreciate the option to become a member without having to build a team and/or do marketing.

As a reminder, it takes time and resources to build a natural medicine cabinet. I’ll be the first person to admit surprise over how many health hiccups we’ve overcome using naturally occurring ingredients. Of course there have been times conventional medicine was needed, and we’re thankful those options exist too.

Buying a year’s worth of beef may seem intimidating, excessive, and expensive. I remember the sticker shock the first time we looked at purchasing bulk beef. Our daughter Q, who we recently discovered had multiple food and chemical sensitivities, needed organic, grass-fed beef. It wasn’t a common thing in grocery stores, so our next best option was to buy direct from a farmer.

My husband did most of the leg work, but I still recall feeling overwhelmed at all the choices. Which cuts did we want, how did we want it packaged, how big should the beef chubs be (what’s a beef chub to begin with?!), when did we need it by, which farm should we go with, how much is this going to cost???

Ten years later, and now I’m the one answering these questions while selling our own organic, 100% grass fed and finished beef! So, if you’ve ever considered this option, here’s my take on how and why you should buy bulk beef!

How to Purchase Bulk Beef

There are several ways to find out which farmers in your area sell bulk beef. You can ask the deli counter at the grocery/meat store, visit local farmer’s markets and ask around, do a quick online search, ask friends and family, or look for small signs in farmer’s driveways. Once you’ve found a farmer (or a couple) here are some questions to consider:

Beef Related Questions

How much is the beef per pound?

What is the average hanging weight per quarter?

How are the cattle fed? (conventional vs. grass fed vs. grass finished)

How long do calves nurse on their mothers?

How are the cattle cared for? (use of antibiotics/growth hormones vs. organic)

What breed are the cattle? (angus vs. jersey vs. devon vs. murray)

Processing Related Questions

How often does the farmer harvest cattle? (year round vs. only fall)

Is a reservation and/or deposit required?

Who does the farmer use for processing?

What are the processing fees?

How is the beef packaged? (paper wrap vs. shrink wrap vs. vacuum seal)

Can you choose how you want the beef processed? (custom cut sheet vs. no options)

What specialty items are available? (brats, hamburger patties, jerky sticks, summer sausage, etc.)

It’s very common for beef farmers (especially grass-fed farmers) to have a website listing the above information. They also typically have the ability to make a reservation online. Otherwise, a quick phone call should provide answers (and perhaps a story or two)!

Quarter Portion Bulk Beef Example

The following example is for a quarter portion of beef, from one of our own heifers (female). The hanging weight was 178 pounds. Over the last few years, our average hanging weights for a quarter portion range from 160-180 lbs. pending the gender and breed of cattle.

Knowing how much money to budget for a quarter portion of beef is very helpful. I’m using the hanging weight number from above, our price for 100% grass-fed and finished beef this year, and the processing fees from this fall.

Price of beef per pound hanging weight (paid to farmer): $4.75 @178 lbs. = $845.50

Processing fees (paid to processor): $203.62

harvest (slaughter) $47.50/quarter

processing $0.84 per pound hanging weight @178 lbs. = $149.52

stew meat $1.50 per pound @ 4.40 lbs. = $6.60

The beef and processing numbers total $1,049.12 for a quarter portion of beef.

How to Calculate Actual Cost Per Pound

So far, cost has been calculated based on hanging weight. This is the weight of the portion hanging on the rail, after removing the head, feet, hide, and organs, and cutting into quarter portions.

When it comes time to finish processing, two additional things happen: more deboning and trimming away excess fat. This means your take home weight will be less than the hanging weight.

It may not seem like bulk beef is less expensive as you’re handing over a fairly large check for the beef and processing. However, when you look at a breakdown of what each cut of beef typically costs at the store verses buying bulk, there is a huge savings. The vast majority of roasts and steaks will cost more than $9.37 per pound when bought individually at a grocery store.

Here are some price comparisons from the two grass-fed beef options our local co-op store provides: ribeye steak $19.99 to $25.99/lb., sirloin steak $15.99/lb., chuck roast $10.79/lb., beef stew meat $10.99 /lb., ground beef $9.99 to $10.99/lb.

knowing where your beef comes from

In addition to being more expensive for individual cuts, the options provided are cooperative based companies, meaning their beef is obtained from various farmers in several surrounding regions. This isn’t inherently bad. However, it does mean the beef is not coming from one direct source. It’s also possible the ground beef is a combination of different cattle vs. one cattle from one farm.

Is it really healthier? How is it different from other beef? And why is it more expensive?! We found ourselves asking those same questions!
I personally feel it’s preferable to source beef from a local farm, where you can visit, ask questions, and make informed decisions based on what you’ve seen. Plus, I think it’s amazing to support truly local businesses whenever possible. We love when customers ask if they can visit and check things out! It helps build relationships, offers time for unlimited questions, and often leaves them feeling like they have greater respect for the food they’ll be receiving.

meal planning bonus

It’s also a blessing to simply walk downstairs and grab whatever meat we need from the freezer for the week. We have a large rectangular Pyrex that holds up to five 1 lb. beef chubs (tubes of ground beef). I usually take out four pounds for the week along with whatever steaks and stew meat I might need. The roasts stay frozen and go right into the crockpot into the morning for tender beef at night. A quarter beef generally fills up the freezer portion of a standard fridge/freezer combo; so a small chest freezer may be helpful, but isn’t necessary.

I hope the “how and why you should buy bulk beef” seems a little less intimidating! Even if we stop raising beef ourselves, we would still purchase bulk beef from other local farmers. It’s convenient, cuts down on guessing when meal planning, and builds community.
